Over the past few years, we have made significant progress in ensuring that qualified humanitarian leaders are selected for key senior humanitarian coordination leadership positions at the field level. However, as the scope of humanitarian needs continues to rise, we are too often struggling to identify available candidates whose profiles are matching the specific requirements of the context.

The IASC Humanitarian Coordination Pool is our main collective tool to address this challenge and I am writing to request your support for the 2016 call for nominations.

The IASC HC Pool is a unique collective talent management mechanism. It serves us to pre-identify high-calibre humanitarian leaders from the UN, Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, NGOs and other organizations, who the IASC consider to be qualified for field-based humanitarian coordination leadership positions. Since its inception in 2009, the HC Pool has grown to include 120 humanitarian leaders from 31 different entities.

However, the Pool membership’s diversity remains inadequate considering the multiplicity of contexts we operate in and the diversity of the people we serve. Only 30% of its members being women and 33% of candidates being from the South, and only 10% of them coming from the NGO community, the current pool is not sufficiently fit for its purpose.

I therefore seek your support in nominating high-calibre candidates for the HC Pool, including women and candidates whose cultural and professional background would increase our ability to deploy the right leader in the right place.

Agencies should send nominations, along with relevant background information (CV and eligibility form), to the dedicated HC Pool email address (hcpool@un.org) by 20 December 2016.

Further details regarding the nomination modalities, as well as an information package are available on the IASC and humanitarianresponse websites. For additional information, please also contact the Talent Management Coordinator, Ms. Claudia Purpura (purpura@un.org).

I take the opportunity to thank you for your engagement in previous rounds of the HC Pool and for the support we have already received from your organisations in preparation of this year’s call for nominations.

I am conscious that to encourage applications and grow our Humanitarian Coordinators talent pool, it will take a specific effort from each of you - so let me thank you in advance for your personal commitment and time in this vital endeavour.

With all best wishes,

Stephen O’Brien
