Review of the Implementation of the IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings

Published Date

November 2, 2014

The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) are the key policy guidelines on psychosocial support. In the past, the field of MHPSS was characterized by diverse and sometimes contradictory approaches. The Guidelines brought about a greater consensus on what MHPSS is. For the first time, major international organizations working in this field agreed to a set of minimum multi-sectoral responses to protect and improve people’s mental health and psychosocial wellbeing in the midst of an emergency.

This review looks at the actual implementation of the IASC Guidelines on MHPSS in the field; it looks at practice and lessons learnt from them, the level of institutionalization of the guidelines, experience of its mainstreaming, its relevance and overall usefulness
