COVID-19 is a global health crisis, an information crisis and increasingly a wider socio-economic crisis. Over the past decade, the West Africa Ebola outbreak and many emergencies from natural disasters to complex humanitarian crises, have shown the critical need to engage communities from the very beginning.
Mr. Mark Lowcock, the Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) and Chair of the IASC, convened an ad hoc IASC Principals meeting to discuss the COVID-19 response, including a discussion on the topics of Localization and Protection from Sexual Exploitation (PSEA) and Abuse and Sexual Harassment.
The humanitarian system is taking action to avert a sharp rise in conflict, hunger, poverty and disease as a result of the pandemic and the associated global recession. Today’s updated Global Humanitarian Response Plan has been expanded in response. It includes nine additional vulnerable countries: Benin, Djibouti, Liberia, Mozambique, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, Togo and Zimbabwe, and programmes to respond to the growth in food insecurity.
