IASC Event - Nutrition Cluster Launch
Geneva
10:00-12:00 (For All) and 12:00-13:00 (Roundtable for Donors with GNC Partners), Room V Palais des Nations, Geneva. Undernutrition is a global crisis: 162 million children are stunted and 52 million are wasted. The causes of undernutrition are multi-sectoral and include food shortages, lack of safe drinking water, inadequate or disrupted health care systems, poor hygiene practices, and abandonment of breastfeeding, all of which are exacerbated in emergencies, accelerating morbidity and mortality. In line with the Transformative Agenda and the recognized need for a multi-sectoral response to effectively address nutrition, the Global Nutrition Cluster has developed a three year Strategic Plan and costed Work Plan outlining priorities to ensure an effective and timely response to nutrition in humanitarian crisis. The discussion will briefly present: An overview of how humanitarian crises exacerbate the already large scale of the problem of undernutrition and the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to respond effectively; Achievement and challenges of the Global Nutrition Cluster; Experiences from the field from partner agencies; Strategic priorities and key activities for 2014-2016. Join us for this presentation by UNICEF (Nutrition Cluster Lead Agency) and several Global Nutrition Cluster partners (Action Contra la Faim, Emergency Nutrition Network, International Medical Corps, and Save the Children, WVI, IFRC WHO, WFP, SCN, UNHCR, GAIN).
