UN Headquarters, New York, 24 September 2018As delivered We are here today because we all recognize that today’s humanitarian crises are pushing tens of millions of adolescent girls closer to the sharp edge of vulnerability. Humanitarian assistance must respond to the specific needs, vulnerabilities and capacities of adolescent girls if it is to be effective.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Ursula Mueller of Germany as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). She will succeed Kyung-wha Kang of the Republic of Korea, who is currently serving as Chief of the Transition Team in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.
On 27 October, IOM launches the “World Migration Report 2015: Migrants and Cities, New Partnerships to Manage Mobility” ─ the eighth report in IOM’s World Migration Report (WMR) series which focuses on how migration and migrants are shaping cities and how the life of migrants is shaped by cities, their people, organizations and rules. The report highlights the growing evidence of potential benefits of all forms of migration and mobility for city growth and development.
Local actors are often the most effective in conducting humanitarian operations. However, despite their critical role, they struggle to attract the funding and support they need.The 2015 World Disasters Report – launched today by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) – examines the complexities and challenges local actors face in scaling-up and sustaining their humanitarian response.
Further to recent discussion at the Emergency Directors’ level regarding challenges in identifying humanitarian leaders, particularly for RC/HC positions, I am writing to call for nominations for the IASC HC Pool.The IASC HC Pool is a roster of humanitarian leaders from the UN, Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, NGOs and other organizations who have been screened by the IASC as potential candidates for Humanitarian Coordinator positions.
